’Tis the season to eat the very best of Scottish food! 2015 is the Year of Food and Drink Scotland and September is celebration month. Across Scotland, people are showcasing the country’s outstanding natural larder and produce with a range of events that put Scotland’s food and drink centre stage.
Here in Cowal, we’ve got so much to celebrate, with seafood fresh from the lochs, venison and game from the hills and a vibrant community of producers making everything from shortbread to chutneys. And local food producers and venues have got together to organise ‘Kitchens of Cowal’, a series of one-off menus and events that are taking place across the region throughout September. Dunoon-based Argyll Cruising, for example, is running three cruises with special menus and visits to seafood producers. Benmore Café at Benmore Botanic Gardens, meanwhile, is offering a menu featuring ‘Food From Argyll’ from 11th-13th September.
Dunoon itself has its fair share of artisan food producers. Argyll Smokery, a small-family run business, creates succulent smoked foods including Argyll smoked salmon, hot kiln-roasted smoked salmon and smoked mussels, prawns and scallops. Or for something sweeter, there’s Caramiche Chocolates, offering a range of delicious handmade chocolates from their shop in Dunoon. And look out for Winston Churchill venison burgers. They’re delicious! Winston himself stalks the deer in the hills around Dunoon. You’ll find this great local produce – and much more -in the hotels, restaurants and cafes of Dunoon. So why not come and help celebrate our natural larder this September? Tuck in!
