August in Dunoon is jam-packed with brilliant events, so we decided to call it ‘Awesome August’.
We’re kicking off with the ‘Toward For A Tenner’ half marathon on Saturday 1st August. It’s been nearly 20 years since Dunoon hosted a half marathon and it’s great to be back on the circuit. The route is a stunner – fast and flat with jaw-dropping coastal scenery. It’s been measured by a Scottish Athletics accredited measurer who reckons we could see some extremely fast times. You can still enter online. We decided to make it a big family day out, so there will be loads of great things for kids to do. We’ve got a bouncy castle, face painting, kids’ theatre with The Walking Theatre Company and a fun run on the esplanade. And we can’t wait to see the Astro Balls – come along and play football while wearing a giant zorbing ball.
Then on the 14th and 15th August the scooters are coming to town with the Dunoon Revival Big Weekender. On Friday there’s free music in the pubs with The Tripps, Seaside Sons, Berry Tweed and the Chasers and Capone and the Bullets. On Saturday afternoon there’s a mass scooter ride out and a ‘best in show’ scooter competition. On Saturday night in the Castle Gardens Marquee we’ve got a floor-filling mix of mod beats and ska with Esperanza, The Amphetameanies, Dogtooth, Combat Rock, MOD LIFE Crisis and The Ramoaners. Tickets are on sale from www.tickets-scotland.com and www.skiddle.com.
Next up it’s one for the cyclists. Saturday 22nd August will see the first Cowal Sportive. Expect Dunoon town centre to be buzzing as the start/finish point for what will be a spectacular sporting occasion. ‘Flying Scotsman’ Graeme Obree and Commonwealth Silver Medallist Charline Joiner will also be joining the cyclists at the Sportive. The two routes offer stunning scenery and excellent road conditions including some of the smoothest tarmac in any location across the country. Outdoor enthusiast and blogger Fiona Outdoors road the route recently and wrote about it in this fantastic blog post. Enter online here.
And to round off ‘Awesome August’ in true Highland style there’s the Cowal Highland Gathering on 27th, 28th and 29th August. This event is renowned for its unique atmosphere, world-class competitors and spine-tingling salute to the Chieftain. There will be the usual mix of Highland dancing, pipe bands, traditional wrestling, heavy athletics and ceilidh music, as well as The Clan Mountain Bike Stunt team with their ’Big Air’ display, the Drakes of Hazard, Artie’s Tartan Tales, the Cowal Kids Tent and more. New for 2015, there will also be a ’Favours and Flavours’ tent showcasing the best of Scotland’s food, drink and crafts including whisky and gin tasting.
Join us on the evening of 27th August at the 2015 Sunset Ceremony. It’s a great celebration of Scottish music, culture and sport and a brilliant wee warm up for the Cowal Gathering. We’ve got lots of great entertainment lined up – watch this space!
