Facebook Urged to Give 100% Social Media Reach to Support Business Recovery

Good afternoon,

Facebook is being urged to help UK businesses reopen safely and therefore save both lives and livelihoods through the recovery phase of coronavirus pandemic.

The social media company has been asked to temporarily suspend its practice of limiting the reach of posts by businesses as firms seek to re-open safely after lockdown.

Facebook has been limiting the organic, or free, reach of corporate posts for a number of years, instead offering companies the chance to pay to reach a larger audience.

Not-for-profit business organisation, Aberdeen Inspired, fears this practice could put people at risk as companies try to communicate safety and social distancing messages as they reopen.

The business improvement organisation, which is led and funded by businesses in the city, has written to Facebook asking that the tech firm consider giving firms 100% reach “for as long as Covid-19 remains a threat to both lives and livelihoods in the UK”.

As a consequence of changes to the platform’s 2018 algorithms most find their messages are reaching just 10-20% of their followers, with Facebook looking for money to reach the rest.

For a business with 40,000 followers, this can mean just 5,000 people are seeing some of their content, messages and promotional material.

Many local radio stations, newspapers and commercial television channels have been offering help – including free advertising – to support businesses. Facebook has yet to follow suit.

Loyalty Card For Businesses

Good afternoon,

As this week marks the start of the very gradual resumption of consumers returning to businesses, the BID team has been looking at the potential of introducing a Dunoon loyalty card for purchases in local businesses.

Swipii.com  operate a loyalty card which allows your business to be in complete control of what cashback level you set for your returning customers.

For example, some of the objectives could be as follows:

  1. Support local businesses by allowing Swipii to drive more footfall and revenue to you
  2. Encourage local consumers to shop local for cashback and save at the same time
  3. 'Recycle' the cashback earned into the community with a few associations to donate to or withdraw

We believe the coming months could well be the perfect opportunity for your business to capitalise on this easy to operate scheme.

Scottish Government Increases Funding Support

Scottish Government Increases Funding Support

In a statement to the Scottish Parliament, the Cabinet Secretary for the Economy, Fiona Hyslop MSP outlined further measures that the Scottish Government are taking to support more businesses adversely affected by Covid-19:

  • Extending the eligibility of the current small business and retail, hospitality and leisure grant to businesses that occupy multiple premises with a cumulative value above 51k;
  • And also to businesses occupying premises such as shared office spaces, business incubators and shared industrial units where the landlord is the ratepayer; and
  • In addition, for those businesses that were ineligible to apply for Hardship Funds because they did not have a Business Bank Account, the Scottish Government will be exploring ways of how to support those companies. Further details will be released later this week.

QikServe - E Ordering Platform

Good morning,

Via the Scottish BIDs Resilience Fund, the Dunoon Presents board continues to look at options for businesses to trade alternatively through and beyond the Covid-19 crisis and to prepare for resumption of trade etc.

We have been in discussions with QikServe, who operate an e ordering platform which creates the option of less close contact between staff and the customer they are doing transactions with and of course crucially, also creates an additional revenue stream for your business.

The QikServe system tends to operate predominantly in the hospitality food/beverage sector but can be used within non food businesses also.

The basic cost for the system is £50 per month for web access and £99 per month for both web and app.

Coronavirus (COVID-19): Business support fund grant statistics

At close on 19th May 2020, Local Authorities reported that over 81,000 applications have been received for the Small Business Grant Scheme and the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Business Grant Scheme across Scotland.

Of these applications, around 65,000 grants valuing over £741m have been awarded.  The table below summarises the progress of the business grant schemes so far for each local authority across Scotland.

The number of applications continues to represent a best estimate, based on available information at the time. Grants awarded represents actual awards made and funds paid out.

Not reflected in the published information are cases where Local Authorities have processed an application which has not resulted in a grant awarded.  This could be, for example, because an ineligible applicant applied and were rejected or because the local authority has asked the applicant for additional information and are awaiting a response.

Free Hand Pump Dispensers and Gel - UPDATE

Good morning,

An update re the FREE Soap Dispensers/Hand Gel via the BIDs Resilience Fund:

We hope to take delivery of these mid to late next week and will get them distributed as soon as practicable thereafter and without delay.

Just some quick pointers:

  1. We will require to prioritise in this phase, those businesses currently trading and preparing to open very soon.
  2. The equipment should be picked up from the Dunoon Presents office in Hillfoot Street.
  3. Please let us know if you need your dispenser fitted and we will arrange that: info@pa23.org.uk (no cost)
  4. We will supply the dispenser full with 1L of gel and thereafter we will sell the re stock gel at cost price: £7.99 plus vat = £9.59
  5. If the BID levy account is in arrears you will be charged cost price for the dispenser: £14.70 plus vat= £17.64 plus the gel cost.
